A Global Partnership to End Pediatric Cancer: KHCC-St. Jude Joint Gala

July 31, 2024 Amman - Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah visited the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) in Amman on Wednesday, on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s accession to the Throne. During her visit, Queen Rania inaugurated KHCC’s new Radiation Oncology building, in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Prince Talal bin Muhammad, Special Advisor to His Majesty, and Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center. Covering over 2,700 square meters and featuring state-of-the-art medical equipment, the new facility was established to meet the rising need, increasing the Radiation Oncology Department's monthly capacity from 260 patients to approximately 400. An estimated 60% of KHCC patients require radiotherapy as part of their treatment plan. Princess Ghida Talal explained that, over the past 25 years, the King Hussein Cancer Center has become a cornerstone of cancer care in the region, serving more than 70,000 patients. She also expressed her deepest gratitude to Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania for their steadfast support of this Jordanian institution. The building’s inauguration was attended by Prince Hussein bin Talal, Prince Muhammad bin Talal, Princess Rajaa bint Talal, Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, Royal Court Chief, Yousef Issawi, Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Azmi Mahafzah, Minister of Health Feras Hawari, KHCC CEO and Director General Asem Mansour, KHCF Director General Nisreen Qatamish, and several members of the KHCF/KHCC Board of Trustees. The Queen also toured several KHCC departments, including Jordan's first neurosurgery suite, in which more than 300 operations have been conducted since its opening in 2019. She also visited the Center’s pediatric department, which treats approximately 90 percent of Jordan's pediatric cancer patients. Spanning 108,700 square meters, KHCC receives approximately 7,000 new patients, 14,000 admissions, and 250,000 outpatient visits each year. Its key facilities include Jordan’s first public umbilical cord blood bank, intensive care units for children and adults, diagnostic and therapeutic radiology departments, a cellular therapy and applied genomics department, and a bone marrow transplant program.

Amman, April 24, 2024 - HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC), launched a new policy paper titled “The Economics of Smoking” which addresses the economic drivers and impacts of tobacco in Jordan during a panel discussion held at the Jordan Economic Forum. The panel discussion included esteemed economists and academics focused on the impact of smoking on the national economy and public health, and was moderated by Dr. Khair Abu Saalik, chairman of the Forum's Board of Directors. During the seminar, Princess Ghida stated, "I address my call to each and every one of us. The time has come for us to take serious and strict steps given the numerous studies and reports that have been written, and the capabilities that already exist. It is our duty to act responsibly and enforce the implementation of Article 47 of the Public Health Law immediately without any delay." Dr. Abu Saalik emphasized that smoking is not only a public health problem but also a significant economic burden that requires continuous, organized efforts to mitigate. He pointed to the paper’s key findings, which highlight the significant financial losses suffered annually by the Jordanian economy due to smoking and which shed a light on the burden it places on the healthcare system. The role of educational frameworks and health awareness in schools and universities as key tools in curbing the spread of smoking among new generations was also discussed, emphasizing the importance of the role that technology can play in monitoring and analyzing smoking trends. In his remarks, Dr. Abu Saalik also stressed the importance of national efforts to combat this menace that threatens the future of Jordan from both health and economic perspectives alike. He further underscored the Forum's commitment to playing a pivotal role in stimulating national dialogue and encouraging policymakers to take serious steps towards addressing the issue of smoking from its roots, given its long-term implications on society and the economy in Jordan. Panelists and participants also reviewed a set of policy recommendations, including expanding awareness campaigns to encompass more age groups, especially youth, and strengthening legislation to combat smoking in public places.

Princess Ghida Talal Launches “Economics of Smoking” Policy Paper

His Majesty King Abdullah laid the foundation stone for the King Hussein Cancer Center's (KHCC) King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein Building in Aqaba. The facility will provide medical care to cancer patients in the southern governorates, instead of having to head to Amman to seek the proper care. King Abdullah, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, listened to remarks by Her Royal Highness Princess Ghida Talal, chairperson of the board of trustees of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the laying of the foundation stone, Her Royal Highness thanked His Majesty for his ongoing support for the KHCC and KHCF. Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi, Health Minister Feras Al Hawari, Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority Chief Commissioner Nayef Al Fayez, and Aqaba Governor Khaled Hajjaj, as well as members of the board of trustees of the KHCF and KHCC, attended the ceremony. The first phase of the project will be launched in the third quarter of 2024, with the four-storey building extending over an area of 6,738 square metres, and employing 90 medical and supporting staff members. The KHCC’s Aqaba facility will provide comprehensive medical services to cancer patients, including early detection, chemo and radiation therapy, laboratories, colonoscopy, pain management, a pharmacy, and home care. Establishing the Aqaba project is in line with the KHCC’s vision to bolster its role as a national institution for cancer treatment. The project is part of the KHCC’s expansion plan, which also included the inauguration of the Samih Darwazah Oncology Centre at Al Bashir Hospital in 2021. More facilities are also planned around the KHCC headquarters in Amman, such as a centre for cancer patients, a radiation therapy facility, outpatient clinics, and research laboratories.

King Lays Foundation Stone for King Hussein Cancer Center Project in Aqaba to Serve Southern Region

Amman, March 2024: The King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) has launched the fourth cycle of the King Hussein Cancer Research Award. The prestigious award was established by HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC) in 2020, with the aim of empowering cancer research efforts that are taking place within the Arab world and/or which focus on cancer in the region. Application submissions are now open through the link www.kinghusseincanceraward.jo. Submissions will be accepted until May 31st, 2024. The Award’s categories include the Lifetime Achievement Award in both regional and international tracks, the Young Investigator Award in both regional and international tracks, and the Promising Researcher Grant. Last year, 200 researchers from 20 countries applied for the Award, and their submissions were evaluated by specialized judging committees based on specific criteria.

Launch of the 4th Cycle of the King Hussein Cancer Research Award

Amman, November 29, 2023 – Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah visited pediatric cancer patients evacuated from Gaza to receive treatment at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC). Queen Rania inquired about the health of the nine children and the well-being of their families. Her Majesty was briefed on the children's health conditions and emotional well-being, as well as the treatment protocols by the Center’s medical staff. HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC), received Queen Rania and expressed gratitude for her humanitarian efforts and directives to transport cancer patients from Gaza amid the extreme hardship they are facing. These nine children are the first of 41 cancer patients to be received at KHCC for treatment. Efforts will continue to bring as many cancer patients from Gaza as possible. The visit was attended by Dr. Asem Mansour, Director General of KHCC, and Mrs. Nisreen Qatamish, Director General of KHCF.

Amman, October 1st, 2023 – HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC), launched the 8th Arab Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign for the year 2023 under the slogan: "A Step Towards Life... Get Examined Now." This campaign, led by the Jordan Breast Cancer Program, aims to raise community awareness and encourage Arab women to undergo early detection screenings for breast cancer. On the occasion of the launch, Princess Ghida stated: “Early detection screenings, especially mammograms, are a vital and life-saving step that women must take to protect their health.” This year, more than 15 Arab countries participated in the 8th Arab Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, including Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Mauritania, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon, Sudan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Tunisia, Qatar, and Jordan.

The event aims to support projects that sustain the fight against cancer in Jordan and the region, such as the establishment of specialized centers across Jordan under the banner of the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC). These include the upcoming King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein Building in Aqaba, and two additional buildings in Amman for pediatric treatment and cancer research. Amman, June 5, 2023 - HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC) inaugurated the 2nd Regional Conference of the Jordan Breast Cancer Program (JBCP) under the title "Integrated Approaches to Breast Cancer Control: Advancing Equity, Collaboration, and Community Voice.” In her speech, Princess Ghida Talal stated: “We will continue to dedicate our efforts and capabilities toward raising awareness across Jordan and the region, until our women’s health becomes their top priority, and until each and every one of them performs their early detection examination without hesitation and fear, and without delay.” The conference, which was held for two days, aimed to discuss the latest practices and challenges in combatting breast cancer, especially early detection examinations. It also included workshops for health service providers, including radiology specialists and technicians. The ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Feras Al Hawari, Minister of Health, Dr. Asem Mansour, CEO and Director General of KHCC and Chairman of the Board of Directors of JBCP, and Mrs. Nisreen Qatamish, Director General of KHCF, along with experts, speakers, and decision makers from more than 12 countries.

Princess Ghida Talal Inaugurated the Jordan Breast Cancer Program’s 2nd Regional Conference

AMMAN — King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden visited the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC), one of the most prominent cancer hospitals in the region. Their majesties were received by HRH Prince Talal Bin Muhammad, special adviser to His Majesty King Abdullah, HRH Princess Ghida Talal, chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and the KHCC. During their tour, which would enhance Jordanian-Swedish health cooperation, Their Majesties were briefed on the Advanced Linear Accelerator (LINAC), a donation made by the Swedish Elekta — a company for radiotherapy, radiosurgery and related equipment and clinical management for cancer treatment - to Al Bashir Hospital in Amman in 2018. They also learned about the installation of Gamma Knife at the Jordan University Hospital, which is an advanced alternative to traditional brain surgery and whole-brain radiation therapy used to treat complex cases. On the occasion of Their Majesties’ visit, Princess Ghida stated: “Since our earliest days, Swedish medical technology, including that of Elekta, has been among KHCC’s preferred partner for radiation therapy equipment. This relationship – and the broader support of Sweden for Jordan’s medical excellence – &nbsp;is an example of the immense success that can be achieved through international partnerships, which help us shoulder the cancer burden.” Health Minister Feras Al Hawari highlighted the ministry’s efforts, in cooperation with partners, to fight cancer and raise awareness about the importance of early detection, as well as to improve medical care in this field, including palliative care. Expressing appreciation of Elekta, Hawari highlighted that the Swedish company’s donation serves the health needs of Jordanian and refugees. Swedish Ambassador to Jordan Alexandra Rydmark said that science and technology are essential to addressing enormous challenges facing humanity, adding “prosperity could be realised only through continuous development, which was emphasised during Their Majesties visit to Jordan”. There are more than 11,500 new cancer cases in Jordan a year. Patients who require radiotherapy as part of their care are treated by Elekta equipment, and several of them are at the KHCC, said Caroline Leksell, a member of the Elekta board of directors.

The King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC) celebrated the start of the new year by publishing their most prominent achievements during 2022. HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of KHCF and KHCC, commended the Center and its staff for continuing to serve 27,000 patients throughout the course of the year, while embracing 6,800 new patients from Jordan and across the Arab world. KHCC witnessed numerous medical achievements during 2022, including the completion of 250 bone marrow transplants with success rates exceeding 85%, which is on par with international rates. Additionally, 33 advanced surgeries were performed utilizing a surgical robot that is the first of its kind in Jordan. As part of KHCF’s strategic objective to support scientific research, the second round of the King Hussein Award for Cancer Research was launched and received 137 applications from researchers in 16 countries. A ceremony was held in November 2022 during which 7 Awardees were honored by HRH Prince Talal bin Muhammad. The ceremony was attended by more than 350 researchers and innovators from all over the world. KHCF had continued successes in early detection and cancer prevention through various programs and campaigns throughout the year. The Jordan Breast Cancer Program (JBCP) encouraged women across Jordan to perform early detection examinations, resulting in more than 28,000 women having mammograms, as well as the equipping of 7 accredited mobile mammogram units with advanced technology. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of women and youth were reached with awareness messages about the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent cancer. KHCF’s Cancer Care Insurance (CCI) program expanded by more than 30,000 new subscribers, bringing the total number of subscribers to over 200,000 individuals and corporate employees. Subscribers will benefit from exclusive immediate treatment at the Center in the event that they are diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to KHCF and KHCC’s supporters, 789 underprivileged patients were able to begin treatment without delay and receive financial support for their treatment, accommodation, and transportation costs through KHCF’s Zakat and Goodwill funds. The Foundation and Center were able to provide patients with extensive psychosocial support; 435 student patients continued their education without interruption through KHCF’s Back to School program, and KHCC’s Healing Garden was inaugurated to serve as a calm and peaceful space for patients and their families. Additionally, the wishes of 220 children were fulfilled through KHCF’s Dreams Come True Program. As we enter 2023, we at KHCF/KHCC pledge to continue our efforts and aim to achieve even more successes. Princess Ghida gave a speech during the ceremony, stating, “This year, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of each awardee of the King Hussein Award for Cancer Research. We are committed to moving forward with cancer research in the Arab world, toward a future without cancer.” Prince Talal presented the awards to seven winners from Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and the United States of America. The awardees were selected from a pool of 137 researchers from 16 countries. All submissions were assessed by a special evaluation committee, based on specific criteria for each award category. The winners of the 2022 King Hussein Award were: Professor Ali Bazarbachi from the American University of Beirut in the category of Lifetime Achievement for a regional doctor, Professor Elias Jabbour from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in the category of Lifetime Achievement for an international doctor, Dr. Hasan Hashem from the King Hussein Cancer Center and Dr. Jibran Sualeh Muhammad from The University of Sharjah in the category of Promising Researcher Grant, Dr. Ahmed Salem from the Hashemite University in the category of Young Investigator Award for a regional doctor, and Dr. Jawad Fares from Northwestern University’s McGaw Medical Center in the category of Young Investigator award for an international doctor. Finally, receiving the award for Clinical Program Excellence was KHCC’s Tobacco Dependence Treatment and Tobacco Control Clinical Program, represented by Dr. Nour Obeidat. The King Hussein Award for Cancer Research is one of the most important scientific research awards for cancer research in the Arab region. It was launched in 2020 in memory of the late King Hussein bin Talal to encourage Arab researchers across the world to participate in cancer research, to improve the understanding of cancer in the region, and to study Arab genes specifically to gain a better understanding of the best ways to treat cancer in the Arab world. The award ceremony was attended by several ministers, the Award’s Board of Directors which includes leading doctors, researchers, and oncologists from across the world, in addition to journalists and award sponsors.

Deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah II HRH Prince Talal bin Muhammad Honors Recipients of the 2022 King Hussein Award for Cancer Research

Amman, October 23, 2022 – HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC) received a delegation of Spanish guests from the Life Challenge Program “Pelayo Vida Challenge” (conducted under Spanish royal patronage) at KHCC. The program, hosted by the Jordan Tourism Board, selects five cancer survivors annually to take on challenges all over the world and subsequently broadcasts their adventures on various Spanish television channels. As part of their visit, the delegation toured KHCC and learned about the Center’s services, medical technologies, and its holistic treatment options for cancer patients from across the Arab world. Dr. Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, Director General of the Jordan Tourism Board, stated, “This challenge will represent women who are still battling cancer, and those who survived it.” He added that the women participating in the program will demonstrate their strength and courage in overcoming cancer and other challenges, and prove their ability to lead normal lives. He also mentioned that choosing Jordan as the host for the challenge in 2022 is an opportunity to shed light on Jordan as a tourist destination and a hub for similar events. The event, which will be held from October 22nd to November 5th, will include cycling, climbing one of Wadi Rum’s mountains, and diving in Aqaba. Participants will be able to enjoy the Red Sea’s majestic beauty, walk through the ancient city of Petra, and enjoy the rapids of Wadi Al Mujib. Upon their return, Queen Letizia of Spain will meet with the cancer survivors to learn about their adventures in Jordan.

Princess Ghida Talal Receives Spanish Delegation from the Life Challenge Program “Pelayo Vida Challenge”

Amman, August 2022 - HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC) inaugurated KHCC’s Healing Garden, which will serve as a unique outdoor space that will enhance patients’ treatment experience, and offer feelings of calm and reassurance for patients and their families. During the event, Princess Ghida stated, “Providing comprehensive care is one of our core priorities, so we created this healing garden to bring calmness and serenity to our patients, and to lift their spirits during treatment. At KHCC, we understand that patients’ spiritual and emotional wellbeing are vital to their healing, and we work to support this wellbeing throughout their treatment journeys.” The garden was made possible through a generous donation from Mr. Ali Kolaghassi, a member of KHCF/KHCC’s Board of Trustees, and was named the “Hasan and Yusra Kolaghassi Garden”. The garden’s inauguration was attended by HRH Princess Raja bint Talal, HRH Prince Muhammad bin Talal, number of supporters, patients and their families, and featured interactive activities for adults and children of all age groups, including an outdoor cinema.

8 June 2022 - His Majesty King Abdullah attended a celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Centre (KHCC), ranked sixth in the world as a specialised cancer treatment centre. In remarks at the event, Her Royal Highness Princess Ghida Talal, the chairperson of the board of trustees of the foundation and centre, expressed appreciation for His Majesty’s ongoing support for the KHCC, which has enabled it “to embrace our patients with the best medical care possible and restore them to health.” “Your Majesty, with your support, our centre will always be the embodiment of the Jordanian humanitarian spirit, the reason for hope and tranquillity among our patients, the pride of the Arab world, from East to West,” Princess Ghida said at the celebration, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Talal bin Muhammad, special adviser to His Majesty. Her Royal Highness said the KHCC has treated over 65,000 cancer patients from across the Arab world over the last 20 years, and kept pace with the latest scientific and international developments in cancer research and treatment. During the event, attended by Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, the princess thanked the KHCC’s supporters for enabling it to succeed. HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC), inaugurated a renovated playroom in KHCC’s Pediatric Department in the presence of HRH Prince Muhammad bin Talal and HRH Princess Rajaa bint Talal. The playroom’s renovation highlights KHCC’s commitment to the strategy of play therapy, which has proved its positive impact in raising the spirits of children with cancer, and enhancing their response to treatment. With an area of 100 square meters, the playroom, located on KHCC’s 6th floor, is equipped with the latest educational and artistic equipment, and cultural exhibits. It will hold musical, dramatic, drawing and sports events under the supervision of professionals. The playroom, which is expected to receive 10 to 15 children per day, will support its users in developing their skills and their personalities while undergoing treatment.
